Kerala Tourist Destinations Distance Table

Major Destinations in Kerala are

MUNNAR

A hill station that rises as three mountain streams merge – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. At 1,600m above sea level, this hill station was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government in South India. One of the most sought after honeymoon destinations in Kerala, Munnar is replete with resorts and lodging facilities that fits a wide range of budgets. Sprawling tea plantations, picturesque towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities make this a popular resort town. Among the exotic flora, found in the forests and grasslands here, is the Neelakurinji. This flower which renders the hills blue once in every twelve years, will bloom next in 2030. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, which towers over 2,695m.  Places to visit include Eravikulam National Park, Anamudi Peak, Mattupetty, Pallivasal, Chinnakanal&Anayirangal, Top Station, Tea Museum, and Meesapulimala.

WAYANAD

Situated in an elevated, picturesque, mountainous plateau in the Western Ghats, the vast misty stretches that hardly expose the mountains beneath them, green meadows of valleys, white water springs, blue water lakes, and wild forests expresses the splendid natural beauty of Wayanad. Its pretty image notwithstanding, perhaps what the visitor finds even more endearing about this quaint little hill station would be its large tribal population of about fifty tribes and their fascinating lifestyles and culture. Travellers can stay at tree-top houses and mud huts and enjoy the thrills of life in the jungle. Places to visit include, Chembra Peak, Edakkal Cave, Meenmutty waterfalls, Kuruva Island, Pookode lake, Karapuzha dam, Wayanad Heritage Museum, Pakshipathalam, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, Banasura Sagar Dam and Karlad Lake.

Thekkady (Periyar)

The very sound of the word Thekkady conjures up images of elephants, unending chains of hills and spice-scented plantations. The Periyar forests of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India. Spread across the entire district are the picturesque plantations and hill towns that nestle beautiful trails for treks and mountain walks. It is one of the oldest tiger reserves in the country and the forests of the Periyar are enhanced by the presence of endangered species including White Tigers. Boating in Periyar Lake, Trekking Trails, and Safari are some of the most popular tourist attractions.

ALAPPUZHA

Referred to as the Venice of the East, Alappuzha has always enjoyed an important place in the maritime history of Kerala. Today, it is famous for its boat races, backwater holidays, and beaches. Another delightful experience while in Alappuzha is the houseboat cruise. Houseboats, designed to be mobile, water-based abodes, are fully equipped with all the comforts of a good hotel room including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cosy living rooms, a kitchen, and even a balcony for angling. An uninterrupted view of life in the backwaters can be enjoyed while staying on a houseboat.

Kovalam

Kovalam is an internationally-renowned beach with three adjacent crescent beaches. It has been a favourite haunt of tourists since the 1930s. A massive rocky promontory on the beach sets the stage for a beautiful bay of calm waters ideal for ambient sea bathing. The leisure options at this beach are plenty and diverse. Sunbathing, swimming, herbal body toning massages, special cultural programs, and catamaran cruising are just a few of them. The tropical sun acts so fast that one can see the faint blush of coppery tan on the skin in a matter of minutes. Life on the beach begins late in the day and carries on well into the night.

Varkala

It hosts the only cliff beach in Kerala. Located 51km north of Thiruvananthapuram city and 37km south of Kollam, Varkala is a calm and quiet hamlet that lies on the outskirts of the district of Thiruvananthapuram. It has several tourist attractions that include a beautiful beach, a 2000-year-old Vishnu Temple and the Sivagiri Mutt – a little distance from the beach. The Papanasam Beach (also called as Varkala Beach), which is 10km away from Varkala, is renowned for its natural spring. It is considered to have medicinal and curative properties. A dip in the holy waters at this beach is believed to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins; hence the name ‘Papanasam Beach’.

Kasaragod (Bekal)

Kasaragod, the northernmost district of Kerala, is arguably a less explored destination. But it has its fair share of attractive beaches, forts, wildlife sanctuaries, trekking trails and other places of interest. Some of the most important attractions are Bekal Fort, Ranipuram Hills, Anandashram, Kottapuram, and Thaikadappuram Beach.

Athirapally Waterfalls (Athirapally)

Athirapally is the land of rivers, forests and great waterfalls. It’s also called as Baahubali Waterfalls since a considerable chunk of the film was shot here. The waterfall originates from the Western Ghats and goes all the way to the Chalakudy River, making it the largest waterfalls in Kerala and hence, a major tourist attraction.

Kochi

Kochi, also known as The Queen of the Arabian Sea, is by far an exquisite halting destination to unwind amidst its posh environment. Touring in Kochi will leave you awestruck – from backwaters to beaches, from coasts to hill stations; this southern state radiates with a jade green glow seasoned with towering palm trees. Fort Kochi has a number of places of interest which includethe Dutch Palace, Jewish Synagogue, St. Francis Church, Chinese Fishing Nets etc.
