Shimla
The former summer capital of British India, set amidst the snow-capped Shivalik Mountains offers some of the most striking views of the mighty Himalayas, the Land of Eternal Snow. Places to visit include the Pinjore Gardens followed by the Ropeway at Timber Trail, and Parwanoo& Ridge, which is a stunning valley and probably the most photographed landmark in Shimla.
Manali
The Hidimba Devi Temple, where Devi Hidimba was known to have meditated, as well as the Club House, Vashisht Bath and Tibetan Monastery are definitely must-visit places in Manali. The Solang Valley river crossing, rock climbing, rappelling, paragliding, mountain bike riding, zorbing, hot air ballooning, pony riding, and cable car riding are the other fun activities.
Rohtang pass
At an altitude of more than 13,000 feet, this is the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti and Ladakh. Other places to visit include Nehru Kund, Gulaba, Rahalla falls, and Rani Nallah. Activities such as riding snow bikes, skiing, and pony ride are quite popular as well.
Kufri
Kufri is a tiny hill station located near Shimla. It is famous for mainly two things – its trekking adventures and the picture perfect vistas it beholds. With its panoramic views of the Himalayas, attractive trekking routes, rich flora and fauna and an abundance of thrilling activities setting a calming ambience, it is also the best place for adventure lovers and those looking for off-the-beaten-track activities. Places to visit are the Cedar Woods, MahasuPeak and the Himalayan Zoo.
Chandigarh
Known as one of the best planned cities in India – the Rock Garden it boasts is a must visit-attraction. It was created by Nek Chand Saini, a government official who secretly started the 40-acre garden secretly in his spare time in 1957.
The Rose Garden, also called the Zakkir Hussain Rose Garden, named after the former Indian president, Zakkir Hussain, boasts a collection of about 50,000 rose bushes – 1,600 different species of roses, spread across 30 acres of land. The foothills of the Himalayas host the famous Sukhna Lake, a rain-fed reservoir created by damming the Sukhna Choe stream.
Dharamshala
Visit the Church of St. John in the Wilderness dedicated to John the Baptist built in 1852 as well as the Gyuto Monastery – a tantric college of monks based on the Tibetan Tantric Wisdom.
The War Memorial at Dharamsala pays tribute to the martyrs of the nation – their names displayed in a natural setting surrounded by trees and gardens. Another place worth visiting is the Namgyal Monastery which is the personal monastery of the 14th Dalai Lama.
Dalhousie
Surrounded by a cover of pine and deodar trees, Panchpula is a spot where five streams join in a waterfall and is an amazing spot in Dalhousie for sightseeing.
Subhash Baoli, a perennial spring which has medicinal properties and believed to have cured the freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose, of his ill health, is a famous tourist spot as well.
Amritsar
Wagah Border is a village known for the famous border ceremony. It serves the purpose of being a good transit terminal and a railway station for travelling between Pakistan and India.
A similar place of interest is the Kartarpur Corridor which is a visa-free border crossing and secure corridor between India and Pakistan.
Amritsar boasts one of the most sacred places in India – The Golden Temple. It is the holiest shrine relevant to Sikhism. As its name suggests, the temple is completely built on marble and gold. Another site to visit here is Jalianwala Bagh. It is a beautiful and well-maintained garden, but most importantly, it serves as a ‘memorial of national importance’, a tribute to the memory of those wounded and killed in the tragedy of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre that took place there on the festival of Vaisakhi, 13 April 1919.
